THE BAHAMAS

Geography

Located just 50 miles off the coast of South Florida, The Bahamas is a beautiful archipelago of 700 islands and cays. The country is within the US Eastern seaboard time zone and just a 30 minute flight from Miami. There is frequent daily commercial air service from all the major US and European cities.

Political and Legal System

The Bahamas has had a continuous Parliament since 1729 making it the oldest parliamentary democracy in the Western hemisphere. By 1973 Independence with membership in The British Commonwealth was granted and the legal system is based on British Common Law while the UK Privy Council acts as the final Court of Appeal.

Demographics

The country has a population of approximately 280,000, more than half of which reside on New Providence. English is the national language. There is a strong contingent of professionals available to provide the necessary offshore services, including in excess of 400 attorneys and all the major accounting firms.

Banking

Financial Activity

Nassau, the capital and centre of financial activity is located on the island of New Providence. It is the hub for the majority of banks and other financial institutions.

Exchange Control & Currency

There are no exchange control regulations for offshore investors utilising banking services, IBCs, trusts, mutual funds and exempt limited partnerships. Furthermore, the Bahamian dollar is pegged to the US Dollar at par.

Taxes

There are no personal, corporate income, death duty, inheritance, VAT or capital gains tax. Stamp duty is chargeable at an ad valorem rate on all real property transactions.
